NEW: Time to Change; let's end mental health discrimination

What is Time to Change?

Time to Change is a social movement run by charities Mind and Rethink Mental Illness and is funded by the Department of Health, Comic Relief and the Big Lottery Fund. There is a national Time to Change campaign that has a number of aims which are:

  • Changing behaviour and attitudes towards people with mental health problems
  • Reducing the levels of reported mental health stigma and discrimination in the local area. Empowering people with experience of mental health problems to be at the heart of all our activity

This is achieved through a range of approaches including campaigning and social contact, as well as embedding mental health and anti-stigma work in local strategies and organisational policy.

Time to Change Hubs

Time to Change want to embed their social movement into local communities, through the establishment of local ‘Time to Change Hubs’. A Time to Change Hub is a partnership of local organisations and people who are committed to ending mental health stigma and discrimination. Hubs are aligned to Local Authority boundaries and there are currently 16 funded hubs across England. Time to Change is now inviting areas to bid for the final round of one-off funding to establish one additional hub per Time to Change region. In CWaC the bid will be coordinated through members of the Mental Health Partnership Board and supported by the Health and Wellbeing Board as the hub host. The funding available will be for a period of 18 months and will provide a champions fund alongside funds to administer the champions fund and coordinate the hub. A local voluntary sector partner will be selected to act as hub coordinator.
How can we get involved?

Many local organisations have already signed up to the Time to Change pledge. If yours hasn’t please do so using this link https://www.time-to-change.org.uk/get-involved/get-your-workplace-involved/employer-pledge

To make our local hub as effective as possible we will be looking for partners to become part of the wider hub partnership. Partners will support the hub to 'empower communities to lead and embed local change together' so that 'people with lived experience can use their skills and talents to campaign on their doorstep with the unity and support of a local collective movement.' We would be looking for partner organisations across all sectors and industries who are committed to helping achieve this. We will be looking to mirror Time to Change's national work whilst tailoring it to work with local priorities.

Partner organisations can be involved as little or as much as they would like, but the more we work together the greater our impact and reach. We are looking for organisations that might have relevant skills that can help support the work of the hub. There may be opportunities to get involved with a particular workstream of the hub such as communication or events. Or you might be doing similar work already and want to join forces. We would particularly like to work together to create a genuine social movement during high profile events such as Time to Talk Day, World Mental Health Day and World Suicide Prevention Day. But we would also like to deliver events to promote our work locally involving as many people with lived experience as possible.
